Why some good people like lots of land use regulations.

Our recent fundraising campaign resulted in 194 contributions averaging $148. That’s a 12% response rate to the solicitation letters we mailed. The mailing also generated one rather negative comment. We mentioned this comment to a long-time property rights advocate in an email. Here’s his response…
As Robert Bruegmann notes in his insightful book Sprawl, this dear lady’s  position is typical of many existing landowners.  Her home was probably constructed before many of the current land use controls took effect.  It was built and landscaped exactly the way the original owner wanted.  Now, this lady has what she wants and doesn’t want to see anything change in the neighborhood, particularly newcomers taking down trees and building new homes near her.  Thus, she likes lots of land use restrictions. The pinch will come when she wants to do something “nice” on her property and finds that she is no longer in control of her own property.
